NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya Airways has confirmed that a passenger died aboard a flight from Nairobi to Lagos after suffering a sudden medical emergency shortly before the aircraft landed in Nigeria.
The national carrier, known publicly as KQ, released an official statement on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, detailing that the medical crisis unfolded on Tuesday evening, October 6, 2026, as the plane was approaching its destination. The passenger was discovered to be completely unresponsive at approximately 9:20 PM Nigerian local time (11:20 PM East African Time), roughly 20 minutes before landing.

Cabin Crew Activated Emergency Procedures In-Flight

Upon discovering the passenger’s condition, the cabin crew immediately administered first aid using their specialized medical training and activated all standard onboard emergency protocols. Despite the mid-air medical intervention, the flight had to proceed to its scheduled destination due to its proximity to the airport.
The aircraft touched down safely at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) in Lagos at 9:41 PM local time. A team of ground medical emergency personnel immediately boarded the aircraft upon arrival to attend to the situation. However, following a thorough examination on the tarmac, the medical team officially confirmed that the passenger had passed away.

Kenya Airways Offers Support to the Bereaved Family

Kenya Airways corporate communications stated that the airline has refrained from disclosing the identity of the deceased or the nature of the medical emergency out of respect for the individual’s dignity.
The airline noted that it is currently providing all the necessary logistical and emotional support to the deceased’s family during this difficult time. Additionally, KQ management confirmed that they are working closely with local Nigerian authorities, aviation regulators, and JKIA agencies to complete the necessary investigations and handle legal clearances. The carrier extended its deepest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased and apologized to the other passengers on board for the distressing inconvenience caused by the tragic incident.
