In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Oburu’s secretariat described the reports as “malicious, unfounded fake news and propaganda” and urged the public and media to rely on official communication channels when seeking information about his health. (People Daily)
“We wish to assure the general public, members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the people of Siaya County, and the entire nation that Dr Oburu Oginga is well, safe, and in good spirits,” the statement said.
Oburu was preparing Raila mausoleum speech
The secretariat said Oburu was preparing his official speech for the handover ceremony of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi when the claims began circulating online. (Citizen)
The office said the ODM leader was continuing to follow his doctors’ instructions to rest and limit heavy physical engagements but remained updated on party and national affairs.
“While Dr Oburu continues to observe strict directives from his doctors to take a forced rest and limit heavy physical engagements, he remains fully updated, mentally alert, and deeply engaged in key party and national matters,” the statement said.
Oburu’s health had recently attracted public attention following a visit to Nairobi Hospital. ODM communications director Philip Etale said the party leader had gone for a routine check-up and was not rushed to hospital. (The Star)
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also said she had visited Oburu and found him in good spirits as he continued recovering. (People Daily)
ODM considers legal action
The party accused those behind the reports of using social media to spread misinformation and said it was consulting its leadership on possible legal action.
“We are in communication with the party leadership to handle the matter legally,” the statement noted.
The office urged those spreading the claims to stop and asked members of the public and media organisations to verify information through official channels before sharing reports concerning Oburu’s health. (The Star)
The statement followed a post by blogger Maverick Aoko on X claiming that “Oburu Odinga youth leader is dead!” The claim was subsequently rejected by Oburu’s office and other ODM officials. (Citizen)
