Nairobi Senator and Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) leader Edwin Sifuna has been unveiled as the preferred presidential candidate of The Equitable Party (TEP) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna was formally presented as the party’s political vehicle during an event in Nairobi on Sunday, October 4, marking a new phase in his efforts to build a national political platform.
Sifuna takes over TEP leadership
TEP party leader Gilbert Marava said the party had agreed to restructure its leadership to accommodate Sifuna and members of his political movement.
“On our end, we have decided to restructure, and in the process, those who registered will stay, and we will bring in our brothers,” Marava said.
Marava further confirmed that Sifuna would take over the party’s leadership and seek the presidency on its ticket.
“Sifuna is going to run for president, and he will be the next leader of the Equitable Party (TEP),” Marava added.
The party was registered in 2022, meaning Sifuna is adopting an existing political outfit rather than launching a newly registered party.
LMM gets formal political vehicle
The development gives Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Movement a formal party structure through which supporters can organise ahead of the 2027 polls.
Sifuna has in recent months increasingly positioned himself as a presidential contender, while LMM has been used as a platform for his political mobilisation outside the mainstream party structures.
The adoption of TEP marks a shift towards a more formal electoral organisation as political parties and movements position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Leaders attend Sifuna’s TEP unveiling
The Nairobi event brought together a number of political leaders associated with Sifuna’s movement.
Those in attendance included Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo.
Several MPs also attended, including Babu Owino of Embakasi East, Anthony Kibagendi of Kitutu Chache South, Majimbo Kalasinga of Kabuchai, Jack Wamboka of Bumula, Patrick Simiyu of Cherangany, Patrick Makau of Mavoko and Clive Gisairo of Kitutu Masaba.
The launch places Sifuna’s presidential ambitions under a registered political party as he and his allies continue efforts to build a broader political formation ahead of the 2027 election.
