Police in Uriri Sub-County, Migori County, have launched an investigation into a shocking domestic violence incident where a 16-year-old Grade 7 boy allegedly attacked his 23-year-old elder brother with a panga. The violent clash at Ochiko-Ite village in the Thim-Jope sub-location was reportedly triggered by a deep-rooted family dispute over their widowed mother’s decision to engage in “wife inheritance”. According to local authorities, the 23-year-old victim sustained severe panga cuts during the attack and is currently receiving emergency medical treatment at Migori Referral Hospital.
Disagreement Over Widow Inheritance Escalates to Violence
Confirming the incident, Thim-Jope Assistant Chief Kerry Otieno stated that preliminary investigations point to long-standing ideological differences within the family regarding the mother’s new relationship.
The elder brother had consistently opposed their widowed mother’s choice to be inherited by a new partner (the stepfather). Conversely, the 16-year-old suspect staunchly defended his mother’s decision.
The conflict peaked when the elder brother reportedly attacked the mother’s partner during an argument. In retaliation, the Grade 7 learner confronted his older sibling, leading to the bloody panga assault.
Local Authorities Call for Family Dialogue
Following the tragic incident, Assistant Chief Kerry Otieno appealed to widows with grown-up children to proactively discuss sensitive family transitions and inheritance matters. He noted that transparent communication within families is crucial to preventing similar domestic disputes from escalating into life-threatening violence.
Local police, in collaboration with the provincial administration, are ongoing with their investigations as they monitor the recovery of the victim.
