Two Kenyan women working at a Nairobi restaurant have been arrested over allegations that they stole bank card details belonging to an American national and used them in an attempted shopping spree.
According to the woman’s account, she had dined at Mama Oliech Restaurant before receiving a bank alert showing that about $375 (approximately KSh48,641) had been charged at a Naivas supermarket.
She disputed the transaction, prompting her bank to block the card.
The woman later reviewed her transaction records and, with the help of CCTV footage from Naivas, allegedly traced the unauthorised transactions to two women who had served her earlier at the restaurant.
The two women reportedly carried out smaller transactions first, apparently testing whether the stolen card details could be used before attempting a larger purchase.
The final transaction at Naivas was reportedly declined, after which the two women abandoned the shopping and fled.
The restaurant owner subsequently lured the two employees back to work, where they were arrested.
The suspects are being held at Kilimani Police Station as detectives investigate the alleged theft and attempted fraudulent transactions.
The allegations have not been tested in court, and the suspects remain innocent unless proven guilty.
