Nairobi, Kenya – Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia FC have unveiled Charles Akonnor, a former Ghana international and ex-Black Stars coach, as their new head coach in a bold move aimed at reclaiming regional football dominance.

A New Era Under Akonnor

Akonnor brings a wealth of experience to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League side, having previously coached Ghana’s national team and various clubs in the Ghana Premier League. His tactical acumen and African football insight are expected to inject fresh energy into the record KPL champions.

The announcement was made official via Gor Mahia’s verified Twitter account, sending waves of excitement among fans of the 20-time Kenyan champions, affectionately known as K’Ogalo.

Akonnor’s last major role was with the Ghana national team, where he led the Black Stars between 2020 and 2021, before being succeeded by Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac.

Kobi-Mensah Bismark Named Assistant

Joining Akonnor in Nairobi is Kobi-Mensah Bismark, another respected figure from Ghana’s coaching ranks. He will serve as assistant coach, bringing a strong background in youth development and fitness.

The duo is tasked with restoring Gor Mahia’s continental credentials, following disappointing exits in previous CAF Confederation Cup and Champions League campaigns.

Gor Mahia’s Ambitions and Challenges

The club’s executive board, led by chairman Ambrose Rachier, expressed confidence in the new technical bench, stating that the team is “committed to returning to the top of African football.”

Gor Mahia is also looking to defend its league title and make a stronger impression on the continental stage. With East African football rising, the move to bring in seasoned tacticians is seen as a direct response to heightened competition.

Foreign Coaches at Gor: A Mixed History

Gor Mahia has had varied success with foreign tacticians. From the success of Dylan Kerr, who won multiple titles, to the brief stints of Steven Polack and others, the club hopes Akonnor will bring long-term stability and results.

What’s Next?

Akonnor and Bismark are expected to take charge immediately, with pre-season training sessions already underway at Camp Toyoyo in Nairobi. Their first major test will be the upcoming Super Cup clash against Tusker FC.

Gor Mahia fans will be hoping this new chapter marks the beginning of another golden era for the club.
