Harambee Stars’ historic run at the African Nations Championships (CHAN) came to a heartbreaking end after losing 4-3 on penalties to Madagascar at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The tense quarterfinal clash had ended 1-1 after regular and extra time, forcing the sides into a dramatic shootout.

Kenya, making their debut in the continental second-tier tournament, started brightly when Alphonce Omija struck first to send the home crowd into wild celebrations. The Stars dominated early exchanges, but Madagascar fought back.

After Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa went close, the islanders eventually found the equalizer, silencing the home support and dragging the contest into extra time.

Both teams pushed for a late winner in extra time, but neither could break the deadlock.

In the penalty shootout, Madagascar held their nerve despite Toky Randrianirina missing early. Kenya faltered as Mike Kibwage and Omija missed their spot kicks, sealing their elimination.

This result sees Madagascar progress to the semifinals in their third CHAN tournament, while Kenya’s dream run comes to an end despite showing promise on their maiden appearance.
