Detectives from Kilimani Police Station are investigating the mysterious death of Zaituni Kavaya, a 54-year-old resident of Kibera, who died under suspicious circumstances while working at an apartment on Mpunga Road.
Kavaya, who had been contracted for laundry duties, reportedly fell from the fifth floor of the building. Police have since arrested five suspects from a Sudanese family, who are being detained at Kilimani Police Station as investigations continue.
Her daughter, Faith Kavaya, recalled receiving a distressing call from police after her mother failed to answer repeated calls.
“I told them this tea will get cold, let me give it to mom when she comes so she can drink, then they broke the news to me and said my mother had died,” Faith said tearfully.
Alleged Dispute Over Missing Money
Court documents indicate that the incident may have stemmed from a dispute involving missing cash. According to defense attorney Wilson Hassan Nandwa, the son of the household accused Kavaya of stealing money from trousers she had washed.
“She had left but was called back. As they insisted on reporting to police, she allegedly tried to escape and fell from the balcony,” Nandwa told the court.
However, the Kavaya family has strongly disputed this version of events. Faith revealed that when she went to collect her mother’s belongings at the DCI office, she only found KSh160, slippers, a dress, and rubber shoes.
Postmortem Findings
A postmortem conducted at Nairobi City Mortuary revealed that Zaituni Kavaya died from multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma, raising more questions about the circumstances of her death.
The family is now demanding justice and transparency in the investigation, rejecting claims that she attempted to flee.
