Martin Kamotho, popularly known as Githeri Man, became an internet sensation during the 2017 general elections when he was photographed eating githeri while standing in a voting queue. The image quickly went viral, turning him into a household name across Kenya.

His newfound fame came with promises of life-changing opportunities. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta even recognized him, and numerous companies rushed to associate with him for publicity. Some brands used him in advertisements, while others pledged various rewards. Unfortunately, many of these promises faded after the hype died down.

However, a few companies fulfilled their commitments. One notable gift was a piece of land in Ngong, which Kamotho still owns.

Life After Fame

Despite the momentary spotlight, Githeri Man’s life has taken a difficult turn. He currently lives in Kayole, where he struggles to make ends meet. Far removed from the glamour of his viral fame, he describes himself as just another ordinary citizen trying to survive.

In a recent appeal, Kamotho asked for support from well-wishers, whether through financial assistance or job opportunities. While he admits age has caught up with him, he insists he is still capable of doing certain types of work if given the chance.

He asked Kenyans to help him, saying, “Mimi naeza taka mnisaidia badala kuenda mguu nipate kagari niendange nako”.

A Reflection on Fleeting Fame

Githeri Man’s story highlights the fleeting nature of viral celebrity status in Kenya—where promises of wealth and transformation often fizzle out, leaving individuals to navigate life on their own once the cameras turn away.
