Kebirigo, Nyamira County – October 2, 2025 – A couple in Nyamira has been arrested after their five-year-old daughter died under disturbing circumstances during a disciplinary incident at their home.

According to police reports, the parents claimed the child, who allegedly suffered from epilepsy, collapsed while being disciplined. However, investigators noted the body bore visible injuries on the head and face, raising doubts about the explanation.

Neighbours Heard Screams Before Death

Residents of the rental apartments in Kebirigo told police they heard the child screaming as she was being beaten before the noise suddenly stopped. Moments later, the couple rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

Police Launch Investigations

The girl’s body has since been preserved at the mortuary pending an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police say investigations are ongoing, with both parents in custody as prime suspects.

Rising Cases of Child Abuse

The case comes amid growing concerns over child abuse and corporal punishment in Kenyan homes, despite legal protections under the Children Act, 2022. Child rights advocates have repeatedly urged parents to adopt non-violent forms of discipline.
