The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, family sources have confirmed.

Speaking on Wednesday, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said that the government had received a formal request from the Odinga family to allow for a 72-hour burial window, in line with the family’s wishes.

“We have received the request from the family to proceed with the burial within 72 hours. The government will work closely with the family to ensure a dignified farewell for the late Prime Minister,” Kindiki stated.

Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving Ayurvedic therapy for several days.

Funeral Preparations Underway in Bondo

Preparations for the burial are currently ongoing at the Odinga homestead in Kang’o Kajaramogi, Bondo, where thousands of mourners are expected to gather to pay their final respects to the veteran opposition leader.

Security and protocol teams from both the national government and the Siaya County Government have been dispatched to coordinate logistics ahead of the burial ceremony.

Nation Mourns the Veteran Statesman

Raila Odinga’s death has sent shockwaves across the nation and beyond, prompting an outpouring of condolences from leaders, diplomats, and ordinary citizens.

President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto earlier visited the Odinga family residence in Karen, where they offered their condolences to Mama Ida Odinga and the family.

International leaders have also joined Kenyans in mourning, hailing Raila as a champion of democracy and a pillar of national unity.
