A 32-year-old British national has lost Sh800,000 in a suspected love scam that turned into a robbery in the Bamburi area of Mombasa.

According to police, the victim checked into a hotel in Mtwapa on October 25, 2025, for a holiday after being invited by a woman he had met online.

He stayed at the hotel until November 2, when his online girlfriend allegedly invited him to her apartment in Nyali.

The Ambush

Upon arriving at the fifth-floor apartment, the tourist said he had just settled in when two men suddenly entered the room.

One of them claimed to be the woman’s husband, while the other posed as a police officer.

The men allegedly took him hostage and forced him to transfer Sh800,000 from his bank account to four mobile phone numbers they provided.

After the transaction, the suspects reportedly escorted him out of the building and vanished.

Police Investigations Underway

The shaken Briton later reported the incident to police, who have since launched an investigation to track down the suspects — including the woman at the center of the plot.

Detectives visited the apartment as part of their ongoing probe.

Police confirmed that while the victim was not physically harmed, the suspects remain at large.
