Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Faces Possible Impeachment After Fresh Motion Tabled

Nyamira County, Kenya — Monday, November 17, 2025, 9:30 AM: Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo is facing a possible impeachment after an ouster motion was tabled before the County Assembly on Monday. More updates on county politics can be found on Sauce.co.ke.

Nyamira MCAs initiated the motion against Governor Nyaribo, citing allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office and irregular appointments. This is yet another attempt to remove him amid growing divisions within the County Assembly.

The motion was filed by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, who accused the governor of gross violations of the Constitution and other laws, as well as abuse of office.

“I wish to give notice of motion for the removal of Honourable Nyaribo, the governor of Nyamira County, from office by way of impeachment on the following grounds: number one, gross violation of the Constitution of Kenya and other laws, and two, abuse of office,” Matwere stated.

Third Attempt at Removing the Governor

The impeachment motion comes as Governor Nyaribo faces a severe political crisis, marking his third attempt at removal in a special sitting of the County Assembly.

In September last year, Governor Nyaribo narrowly survived an impeachment motion by a single vote. During the hearing, 34 MCAs convened, with 22 voting in favour of his removal, 12 opposing, and none abstaining.
Details on county assembly procedures can be reviewed through the County Assemblies Forum.

A year earlier, in September 2023, he also escaped an impeachment attempt when 18 MCAs rejected the motion. Sixteen members had voted for his removal, falling short of the two-thirds majority required for the process to succeed.

Ongoing EACC Investigation

At the same time, the county boss remains under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of significant corruption and abuse of office. Information on EACC processes is available at eacc.go.ke.

Last month, EACC raided the homes and offices of Nyaribo over alleged involvement in a corruption scandal linked to a Ksh382 million irregular tender.

The October 29 morning operation also targeted several senior county officials suspected of participating in the scheme. The searches targeted the residences and offices of county officials identified as persons of interest and were conducted simultaneously in Nyamira, Kisii, and Nairobi counties.

Assembly to Debate Motion

Meanwhile, the Speaker adjourned the House until Tuesday, November 18, this year, at 9:30am, when members will reconvene to discuss the motion.
General county government procedures are outlined by the Council of Governors.
