A suspected criminal was on Monday morning fatally shot along the Southern Bypass in the Dagoretti area, Nairobi, after a botched robbery attempt targeting motorists.
Police say the man was part of a gang that has been attacking motorists along the stretch, which has recently recorded a surge in violent incidents. Several drivers have previously sustained serious injuries, while others have reported damaged vehicles during late-night and early-morning attacks.
According to authorities, the gang had been placing large blocks on the road to force motorists to slow down or stall before robbing them. The criminals reportedly operate in dark, isolated sections of the bypass where visibility is low and escape routes are easy.
The suspect was shot during an exchange with officers who were responding to distress reports from motorists. Police say the operation is part of an ongoing crackdown to restore safety along the busy highway.
Investigations are underway as police pursue the remaining members of the gang.
