Five fishermen have lost their lives after a boat capsized on Lake Victoria near the Dho-Goye area in Usigu Sub-County on Sunday evening. The incident occurred when strong winds overturned the vessel while the fishermen were out on a fishing trip.
According to John Ochieng’, chairman of the Usenge Beach Management Unit (BMU), there were seven fishermen on board at the time of the tragedy.
“Five fishermen drowned after the boat capsized due to strong winds. One fisherman survived after clinging to the overturned boat until fellow fishermen arrived and rescued him,” Ochieng’ said.
Two of the deceased have already been recovered and taken to Got Agulu Sub-County Hospital mortuary, while search operations continue for the remaining three missing fishermen.
Ochieng’ confirmed that BMU officials, alongside local fishermen, are actively combing the waters in a bid to locate the missing victims. Authorities are urging boat operators to exercise caution as strong winds and rough waters continue to pose risks in the area.
The tragic incident underscores the dangers faced by local fishermen on Lake Victoria, especially during periods of adverse weather, and highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures for fishing vessels.
