Businesswoman and singer Akothee has called on young people to reflect on the tragic murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, saying the case should be viewed as a life lesson rather than an occasion for celebration or condemnation.
In a social media post shared after the conviction of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his two co-accused, Akothee described the events surrounding Sharon’s death as “a love story between two adults” that ended in unimaginable tragedy.
She said the case had left behind lasting pain, with Sharon’s family continuing to grieve the loss of a daughter, innocent children growing up without their mother, and a father, leader and son now facing the consequences of his actions behind bars.
According to Akothee, the case should remind Kenyans that no relationship or personal desire is worth sacrificing one’s future or conscience.
“Nothing is worth your soul,” she said, urging people to draw meaningful lessons from the tragedy.
The singer encouraged young people to build their own lives instead of depending on others for success or happiness.
“You can’t live a life you haven’t built for yourself,” she noted, while urging Kenyans to remain content with what they have and to uphold faithfulness in their relationships.
Akothee also advised married men to remain committed to their spouses or be honest with their families rather than living double lives that could expose them to blackmail and devastating consequences.
She further urged women to prioritise self-love and have the courage to walk away from unhealthy relationships, warning that “one demand might end your life.”
Her remarks come a day after the High Court convicted former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo and former Migori County Clerk Caspal Obiero over the 2018 murder of Sharon Otieno.
Justice Cecilia Githua ruled that the prosecution had proved the murder case against the three beyond reasonable doubt, finding that they acted with a common intention in the killing.
Following the conviction, the court revoked their bond terms and ordered that the three remain in custody at Industrial Area Remand Prison pending sentencing. The court also directed that pre-sentence and victim impact reports be prepared before sentencing.
