Police have shot dead a 38-year-old man in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area after he allegedly confronted officers while armed with a sword following a mobile phone theft incident.
According to police reports, the suspect allegedly stole a Samsung A12 mobile phone valued at KSh16,000 from a man along 1st Avenue in Eastleigh before fleeing the scene.
Police said members of the public attempted to pursue and recover the stolen phone, but the suspect allegedly pulled out a Somali sword and threatened those trying to stop him.
The pursuit reportedly continued until the suspect reached the Air Base Police Post, where police officers intervened.
Officers said the man ignored verbal orders and warning shots before allegedly advancing towards them while armed, forcing them to open fire.
The suspect died at the scene following the shooting.
Police recovered the stolen mobile phone, a Somali sword and a kitchen knife, which have since been preserved as exhibits as investigations into the incident continue.
