Nairobi, August 2026 — A traffic police officer has died after she was knocked down by a lorry while controlling traffic at a busy junction in Makadara, Nairobi.
Corporal Joyce Muthoni succumbed to her injuries at Nairobi West Hospital, where she had been rushed for emergency treatment following the crash.
According to a police report, Muthoni was controlling traffic at the Lungalunga Road-Mogadishu Road junction when she was struck by an Isuzu lorry bearing registration number KZQ 282.
The lorry was reportedly travelling towards Donholm from the House of Manji direction.
Witnesses told police that Muthoni had directed the driver to stop and give way to motorists joining Mogadishu Road. However, the driver allegedly failed to obey the officer’s instructions and instead hit her before speeding away from the scene.
The impact left Muthoni with a fractured pelvis, facial injuries and extensive bruising. She was subsequently taken to Nairobi West Hospital, where she later died.
The lorry allegedly continued speeding away after the collision and crashed into three other vehicles in the process.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the driver, who remains at large. Investigators are also searching for the lorry as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
The incident has raised renewed concerns over road safety and compliance with traffic officers’ instructions, particularly at busy junctions in Nairobi.
