NAIROBI, Kenya — A Nairobi court has granted police an additional four days to hold two men suspected of involvement in the murder of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso as detectives continue investigating the case.
The suspects, Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kevin Ngugi Kinuthia, will remain in police custody as investigators work to complete key forensic and financial inquiries.
Police had sought a further seven days to detain the two suspects in an application filed before Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai at the Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court on September 10.
Police Await Forensic and Cybercrime Reports
Police officer Romana Odour, attached to the Homicide Investigations Department, told the court that releasing the suspects could interfere with ongoing investigations.
Detectives are still waiting for reports from the National Forensic Laboratory, including cybercrime and other forensic analyses that investigators say are crucial to the case.
Police also told the court that the Financial Reporting Centre (FRC) had not yet submitted a financial report required to help detectives question the suspects about the financial aspects of the alleged murder.
Suspects Have Been in Custody Since August
Njoroge and Kinuthia were arrested on August 7 and arraigned in court on August 10.
The two suspects were initially granted a 30-day custodial period, which was due to expire before investigators completed their inquiries.
Njoroge is being held at Pangani Police Station, while Kinuthia is detained at Gigiri Police Station.
Police Seek More Witness Statements
Investigators also said they needed additional time to record statements from newly identified witnesses.
Some of the witnesses are reportedly based outside Nairobi, making it necessary for detectives to travel before completing the interviews.
The latest application came as detectives continue piecing together evidence surrounding the death of Dr Victoria Mutiso, with forensic, financial and witness investigations still underway.
