Nyashinski Ordered to Reveal Tecno Deal Documents in Copyright Dispute

Kenyan rapper Nyamari Ongegu, popularly known as Nyashinski, has been ordered to disclose documents relating to his 2023 brand endorsement deal with Tecno Kenya in an ongoing copyright dispute.

The High Court dismissed Nyashinski’s appeal challenging an earlier order requiring him and Tecno Mobile to produce the endorsement agreement and related financial records.

The case was filed by Nigerian music producer Sam Are Eliapenda, who claims he owns 50 per cent of the publishing rights to Nyashinski’s song Wach Wach.

Eliapenda argues that the song was used in Tecno Camon 20 promotional campaigns, entitling him to a share of earnings generated from the endorsement deal.

Nyashinski had opposed the disclosure of the documents, citing confidentiality obligations, trade secrets and concerns over revealing his financial information.

He also argued that the agreement with Tecno covered his image and promotional services, rather than the publishing rights to the song.

With the High Court dismissing his appeal, the dispute will now return to the Magistrate’s Court for further proceedings.
