Kericho Governor Eric Mutai is facing a court case filed by a university student seeking KSh200,000 monthly in child support for a two-year-old child she alleges he fathered.
Maureen Chepkirui, a fourth-year student at Kabianga University, claims Mutai has failed to contribute towards the child’s upkeep since the child was born in July 2024.
According to court documents, Chepkirui has no source of income and has been relying on relatives to provide food, shelter, medical care and other necessities for herself and the child.
She is also seeking orders compelling the governor to provide his national identity card details to facilitate the child’s birth registration, which she says has been delayed.
Chepkirui claims Mutai offered to pay KSh25,000 per month after receiving a demand letter. However, she rejected the amount, arguing that it was insufficient to meet the child’s needs.
The governor subsequently filed a separate case accusing Chepkirui of denying him access to the child, an allegation she has disputed.
The court has ordered that Mutai be served with the case documents, with the matter scheduled for mention on September 28, 2026.
The case will determine the parties’ respective claims as the court considers the child-support and access issues.
