A three-year-old boy has drowned in a well at his grandfather’s farm in Kawathi Village, Gikuuri Sublocation, Embu East Subcounty.

Police said the incident occurred on September 17, 2026, with the deceased identified as Brian Munene Mutugi.

According to police, Brian had been at the farm with his mother, who was fetching water from the well. After returning home, she left the child playing at the farm.

A short while later, Brian’s grandfather, John Njeru Ndwiga, went to the farm and discovered the boy’s body floating in the well.

The grandfather retrieved the child and alerted his father, after which they rushed him to Ena Tenri Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police officers visited the scene and documented the incident as investigations continued.

The tragedy has renewed concerns over the safety of open wells and other water sources around homes and farms, particularly where young children may access them unsupervised.
