On Tuesday, Meta Platforms-owned services, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, experienced widespread outages affecting hundreds of thousands of users worldwide, as reported by the outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
The disruptions began around 10:00 am ET, with over 300,000 reports of outages for Facebook and approximately 40,000 reports for Instagram.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone acknowledged the issue, stating, “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.”
Additionally, Meta’s status dashboard indicated that the WhatsApp Business application programming interface (API) was also encountering issues, with around 200 reports of outages on Downdetector.
The outage quickly became one of the top trending topics on X, formerly Twitter, with numerous users reporting sudden logouts from Meta-owned social media platforms.
