The Meteorological department’s latest forecast predicts ongoing rains in many parts of the country, including Nairobi, throughout the month of March. While brief dry spells may occur, March is expected to be unusually wet, with isolated episodes of heavy rainfall likely in some areas.
Dr. David Gikungu, the director of the Meteorological department, highlighted the risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying areas of various regions. Farmers are advised to consult agriculture extension officers for guidance on planting schedules.
Specific forecasts for March have been issued for different regions, indicating above-average rainfall in many areas. The Rift Valley highlands, Lake Victoria region, and parts of Central Kenya are expected to receive continuous rainfall, with amounts likely exceeding the long-term average.
In contrast, coastal areas may experience a dry spell during the first half of the month, with rainfall anticipated later in March. Similarly, northeastern regions are expected to be sunny and dry initially, with occasional rainfall towards the end of the month.
Despite the rainy conditions, temperatures across Kenya are expected to be higher than average for March, attributed to the ongoing El Niño weather pattern. While neutral conditions may follow, some weather agencies predict the possibility of La Niña later in the year, which typically brings dry weather to Kenya.
The forecast underscores the importance of preparedness and caution, particularly in areas prone to flooding and lightning strikes. The public is advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions during the rainy season.
