At least 21 people have died when a bus heading to Nairobi from Kampala crashed just before crossing to the Kenyan side of the border.

Ugandan regional police spokesman Rogers Taitika has told AFP that 13 of the people who were killed killed are Kenyans while the rest are Ugandans.

The bus was travelling from the eastern Ugandan city of Mbale to Nairobi. It crashed in Lwakhakha, just across the border from Kenya.

Another 49 people were injured, Taitika told AFP adding that the driver had apparently lost control, sending the vehicle veering off the road.

“Preliminary findings point to a case of overspeeding by the bus driver,” he added.

According to an eyewitness, the bus was moving at a high speed and failed to negotiate a small corner before veering off the road.

The fateful bus, registration number, KCL 850M belongs to Nairobi Bus Company.

The bodies of the dead have been taken to Chepteyis and Lwandanyi hospital mortuaries near the Kenyan border.
