Police in West Pokot County have recovered three firearms in the ongoing operation to curb banditry by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and National Police Service (NPS).

“The local administrators and opinion leaders within Pokot Central Sub-County recovered and surrendered three firearms to NPS,” NPS said in a statement on Wednesday.

One of the weapons was a Bren gun recovered from Loyapat Village in Turkana South.

The other two firearms, an ARX-200 Barreta, and an FN were recovered in Amarel Sub Location within Pokot Central Sub-County.

On Wednesday evening, one of the residents from Baragoi surrendered an AK47 rifle loaded with with one magazine loaded with 3 rounds of ammunition (7.62x39mm) to the Samburu sub County Deputy County Commissioner.

The military was deployed to the banditry-hit North Rift on Monday after Interior CS Kithure Kindiki gazetted the move.

He further imposed a 30-day dusk to dawn curfew in Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia and Samburu.

CS Kindiki clarified that the KDF was only called in to assist police in the operation.
