One passenger was shot dead and two others were left injured by suspected bandits on Wednesday after the matatu they were traveling in was attacked.

According to a police report, the vehicle was headed to Kitale from Lodwar when it was stopped by a group of around 10 men past Kakong’ Trading Center.

The driver, identified as David Wekesa, is said to have defied the men’s orders to stop and sped off, prompting the bandits to open fire at the matatu.

In the melee, one 30-year-old Jackline Ekai was shot dead, Wekesa was shot in the neck and a 14-year-old minor was shot in the left leg.

“The vehicle landed on the left side of the road whereby the bandits stole all valuables from the passengers,” stated the police report.

A police team responded immediately to alarm calls and engaged in a fierce shootout with the bandits before they were repelled and then took off.

Meanwhile, the injured have been taken to Kakong’ Dispensary for treatment while the body was transferred to Lodwar County Referral Hospital mortuary.
