The Bakisa school pregnancy cases have drawn fresh demands for investigations after the Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) condemned reports that 36 learners at the school in Webuye, Bungoma County, have been affected by teenage pregnancies.
The senators want security and education authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the cases and identify those responsible.
The school has reported that 13 affected learners have already given birth, 13 are expectant and another 10 have dropped out after becoming pregnant.
The latest intervention came as women senators began their Senate Mashinani tour in Kilifi County.
Women Senators Demand Probe Into Bakisa Cases
KEWOSA has called for speedy investigations into the circumstances surrounding the pregnancies.
The lawmakers say the reported cases require coordinated action from the Ministry of Education, National Police Service and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The senators want authorities to establish who is responsible and take appropriate legal action where offences are established.
KEWOSA Condemns Reported Pregnancies
The senators, led by Nominated Senator Catherine Muma, expressed concern over the number of learners affected.
Speaking at Malindi Women’s Prison in Kilifi County, Muma said the situation shouldn’t be treated as normal.
She argued that describing the cases simply as teenage pregnancies could obscure the possibility of sexual offences against minors.
The remarks came amid an ongoing police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the cases.
Senators Call for Swift Investigations
The lawmakers called for faster investigations involving all relevant agencies.
They specifically mentioned the Ministry of Education, National Police Service and DCI.
The senators also said they were willing to work with the Interior Ministry to help ensure investigations move forward.
Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda separately called for those responsible to be arrested.
