NAIROBI, Kenya — Dr David Silverstein, the longtime personal physician of former President Daniel arap Moi, has died, with former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi mourning the doctor as a dedicated medical professional and close friend of the Moi family.
Gideon announced Silverstein’s death on Sunday, describing him as a doctor whose care, compassion and friendship left a lasting impression on the family.
Gideon Moi Pays Tribute to Silverstein
In a statement, Gideon praised Silverstein for his attention to detail and empathy, saying the doctor made a lasting impact on the people he treated.
“Dr Silverstein left a lasting impression on those he treated, and we witnessed firsthand his attention to detail and empathy,” Gideon said.
According to Gideon, Silverstein viewed his responsibility to Mzee Moi as extending beyond the conventional doctor-patient relationship.
He said the physician took time to listen to the former president, understand his needs and provide care with compassion.
“To him, Mzee Moi was not merely a client. He was a human being whose health, dignity and wellbeing mattered deeply to him,” he said.
Moi Family Remembers Doctor’s Compassion
Gideon said Silverstein extended the same humanity and compassion to everyone who came under his care.
He described the late physician as a dedicated doctor whose approach to medicine was defined by empathy and genuine concern for his patients.
On behalf of the Moi family, Gideon extended condolences to Silverstein’s family, led by his wife, Channa Commanday.
“We are deeply grateful to them for allowing Dr Silverstein to walk with Mzee Moi throughout his journey of health,” Gideon said.
Gideon added that the family would continue to remember Silverstein not only for his medical care but also for the friendship he developed with the family over the years.
“His care and friendship will always be remembered with gratitude.”
The death of Silverstein marks the loss of a physician who played a significant role in the care of one of Kenya’s longest-serving presidents.
