President William Ruto has hinted at plans to elevate Kericho town to city status as the government rolls out major housing and infrastructure projects aimed at transforming the town into a regional economic hub.
Ruto said the government is investing KSh5.6 billion in the first 2,200 affordable housing units in Kericho, forming part of a larger plan to construct 5,000 units in the town.
The President said the housing project is among several developments expected to accelerate the transformation of Kericho and improve opportunities for residents.
Kericho Set for Special Economic Zone
The government also plans to establish a Special Economic Zone in Kericho as part of efforts to attract investors, create employment opportunities and unlock digital economic potential.
The proposed developments are expected to strengthen Kericho’s position as a major commercial and economic centre in the region.
Ruto’s remarks have also fueled speculation that Kericho could soon join Kenya’s growing list of cities as the government and local authorities work towards meeting the requirements for elevation.
Kericho Eyes City Status
Kenya currently has five cities: Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret. Eldoret became Kenya’s newest city in 2024.
Kericho is now among towns pursuing city status, alongside Thika and Meru, as authorities seek to meet the legal and administrative requirements required for elevation.
If successful, the move would give Kericho greater recognition as an urban centre and potentially accelerate investment in housing, infrastructure, business and other services.
