Investigative journalist Denis Okari has opened up about his struggles with suicidal thoughts and a dark period in his life, during which he contemplated crashing his car.
Speaking at the Daughters of Zion event hosted by Rev. Kathy Kiuna, Okari discussed his past marriage to TV presenter Betty Kyallo, their subsequent divorce, and the profound impact it had on his well-being.
The former TV news anchor candidly revealed that the overwhelming nature of the divorce pushed him to consider ending his own life in order to escape the turmoil. Okari emphasized that marriage is not meant to end in divorce, expressing the deep emotional toll it took on him.
Recalling a particularly distressing moment, Okari shared that while driving along Mombasa Road, the idea of crashing his car crossed his mind. He contemplated sliding into a coma, hoping that upon awakening, all his troubles would have passed. He even searched for a boulder that was once on the road, but it eluded his sight that night.
Okari also shared the sense of shame he experienced as the eldest child in his family, unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for his divorce when everyone looked up to him. He described the battles he faced privately, publicly, and even spiritually.
Eventually, Okari found solace and strength in his faith, turning to God during this tumultuous period. He chose to keep his struggles hidden, but within him, anger and turmoil raged. Over time, he remarried and reconnected with the church, deepening his relationship with God.
It is through his journey of personal growth and resilience that Okari emerged from the darkness, shedding light on his experiences and finding renewed purpose and peace.
