Police in Migori were forced to shoot and kill a man who had gone on a violent rampage, armed with a panga, after he had killed a dog and drank its blood.
The incident occurred in Ndege Oriedo village, Rongo sub-county, on the evening of July 3.
The man in question was identified as George Otieno Okoth, a 40-year-old. According to his relatives, he suddenly became violent and began threatening them.
The situation escalated further when he turned his aggression towards the family dog. He mercilessly killed the animal, slit its head, and shockingly drank its blood.
As the horrifying scene unfolded, his 10 children fled in fear, seeking safety from their father’s alarming behavior.
One of George Otieno Okoth’s brothers managed to escape the chaotic situation and urgently reported the incident to the Kamagambo police station.
The police promptly responded to the distress call and arrived at the scene. However, when they confronted the unruly man, he refused to cooperate and attempted to attack the officers with his panga.
Despite numerous pleas from both the police and his family to calm down, his aggressive behavior persisted.
In an effort to defuse the situation, the police resorted to firing warning shots into the air. Regrettably, these measures proved unsuccessful in subduing George Otieno Okoth.
Consequently, the police were left with no choice but to open fire, resulting in his death.
His body was transferred to Rosewood Hospital Mortuary, while the police initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. Initial reports from the police suggest that the man’s actions may have been influenced by mental stress, indicating a potential underlying mental health issue.
