Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform X, revealed on Thursday that the platform will soon introduce video and audio calling features, marking a significant stride in its transformation into an all-encompassing application.
In a post on the platform, Musk stated, “Video & audio calls coming to X,” although he didn’t specify the exact release date for these new functionalities.
The upcoming calling features are expected to function across iOS, Android, Mac, and PC systems, eliminating the need for a phone number to initiate calls.
Musk emphasized that X will serve as a comprehensive global address book, describing it as a unique amalgamation of features.
Just last month, Musk, along with newly appointed CEO Linda Yaccarino, announced the rebranding of Twitter as X.
This strategic shift aimed to reshape X into an “everything app,” drawing inspiration from China’s WeChat. The transformed platform would offer users the ability to socialize and manage financial activities within the same environment.
Additionally, X’s subsidiary, Twitter Payments LLC, obtained a significant currency transmitter license from the state of Rhode Island.
This pivotal step grants X the authority to engage in various cryptocurrency-related operations, such as managing exchanges, wallets, and payment processing. CoinWire, a cryptocurrency news website, reported this development, noting that the license empowers X to securely handle digital assets on behalf of its users.
Following Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October, the platform experienced a decline in its advertising business due to shifts in management and extensive content moderation-related layoffs.
In response, Musk directed efforts toward building a subscriber-based model to explore new revenue streams.
However, X’s introduction of charges for previously free services and adjustments to content moderation, coupled with the resurgence of previously banned far-right accounts, faced criticism from both users and advertisers.
In line with the transformation, Musk also opted to replace the well-recognized blue bird logo of Twitter with a distinctive white X, visually signifying the platform’s evolution.
