Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki issued a directive on Thursday, mandating that only authorized staff and individuals seeking services would be permitted to enter Nyayo House premises.
This decision followed an impromptu visit done by Kindiki to Nyayo House. The building which also accommodates the State Department of Immigration and Citizen Services responsible for passport processing.
As part of the ministry’s strategy to eliminate challenges affecting those seeking passports, the ministry also imposed a ban on boda boda riders operating in the vicinity.
“Access to the Immigration Department Headquarters in Nyayo House will, from now on, be restricted to staff members and service-seekers holding valid documents, including appointments for submissions and biometric data capture,” Kindiki declared.
“It is important to notify the general public that security measures in the vicinity of the premises have been enhanced. Loitering without a valid reason will not be permitted,”he added.
The Cabinet Secretary emphasized ongoing efforts to streamline operations at the facility. These efforts include law enforcement process to identify individuals involved in bribery and obstructing the process.
Regarding the backlog of 44,000 passport applications, Kindiki assured that the government aims to resolve this within the next two weeks. He also outlined plans to allocate Ksh1.3 billion in the FY 2023/24 to procure modern equipment, including advanced printers, for the Department.
