An ex-hacker, known as ‘404’, who embarked on an illicit online journey at the age of 18, has shared invaluable insights into identifying fraudulent emails and safeguarding one’s online presence.

This reformed cybercriminal turned cybersecurity professional offers essential advice for spotting scam emails and emphasizes the importance of responsible online behavior.

404, who spent eight years engaged in unlawful online activities, highlighted that phishing emails remain a prevalent tool used to deceive vulnerable individuals who may be susceptible to scams.

He emphasized that tactics like phishing, fake emails, and replica websites are employed to trick people into disclosing personal and financial information. To avoid falling victim to such scams, he advised skepticism toward unsolicited communications and the verification of sender authenticity.

The former hacker provided valuable guidance on identifying deceptive emails. His top tip was to meticulously scrutinize the email address, ensuring it originates from a verified sender or organization.

He also urged recipients to be vigilant for spelling and grammar errors within the email content.

Generic greetings, threatening language, or linguistic mistakes can be red flags. Furthermore, he cautioned against clicking links from unverified sources and recommended hovering over links without clicking to determine their destination.

In an era where oversharing is prevalent, 404 underscored the importance of protecting one’s personal information online.

He noted that many individuals are unaware of their online exposure, emphasizing that sensitive data such as full addresses, bank details, National Insurance numbers, and family information should be kept offline.

Strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and secure devices were advocated as effective ways to thwart online con artists.

404 acknowledged the effectiveness of antivirus software like McAfee, Norton, and Bitdefender but stressed that regular updates and proper configuration are essential for optimal protection.

Additionally, he cautioned against evolving online threats such as social engineering and deepfake scams, urging individuals to stay informed and verify information from trusted sources.

The former hacker’s transformation from a cybercriminal who once earned $500,000 in a year to a cybersecurity professional was fueled by guilt and fear over the harm he inflicted.

His most significant illegal act involved infiltrating a major financial institution’s systems, resulting in substantial financial losses for numerous individuals, small businesses, and communities.

Now dedicated to ethical cybersecurity, 404 encourages those with hacking skills to pursue a legal and fulfilling career in the field.

404’s journey serves as a cautionary tale and a testament to the potential for positive change in the cybersecurity realm.
