The body of a 23-year-old Kenyan student who went missing while swimming in a lake in western Australia on Sunday has been retrieved after a 48 hour search.

Orville Kimutai Tures was swimming at Stockton Lake, near the town of Collie, at 3.15pm on Sunday when he went missing.

Australian police say other swimmers who were around when Tures drowned were unable to save him when the incident happened.

South West police officer Geoff Stewart told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that Tures was last seen swimming in the lake about 3pm on Sunday.

“We received the report of someone that had gone missing whilst in the water at Stockton Lake, Collie,” Superintendent Stewart said.

Stockton Lake is a rehabilitated mine site and popular camping spot just outside Collie.

In 2019, 22-year-old John Rashidi from the Congo drowned at the lake.

The region is home to several inland lakes which Royal Life Saving WA spokesperson Lauren Nimmo said could present hidden dangers.

Tures, who hails from Kapteren in Elgeyo Marakwet went to Australia in March this year. He was a student at a university in Perth.
