As an auxiliary event to the ongoing climate summit in Nairobi, the Lake Basin Mall in Kisumu has kicked off a unique initiative aimed at addressing climate change issues head-on.
Kisumu County Commissioner Hussein Allason officially inaugurated the event, highlighting its commitment to analyzing the progress made in climate mitigation efforts and exploring further opportunities for action in tandem with the Nairobi summit.
The event involves a group of dedicated cyclists embarking on a journey from Kisumu to Nairobi, passing through Kericho and Nakuru along the way.
Their mission is to raise awareness about the pressing importance of climate change mitigation. Allason expressed hope that this cycling campaign would contribute positively to the environment.
Farida Salim, Kisumu County Executive for Trade and Industry, emphasized the significance of hosting a climate meeting in the area, positioning Kisumu at the forefront of environmental conservation efforts.
She welcomed all summit participants to Kisumu and looked forward to expanding this initiative annually.
CPA Wycliffe Ochielga, the manager of the Lake Basin Development Authority, highlighted the educational aspect of the event.
The activities include tree planting, with a focus on fruit trees, and public awareness campaigns. Ochielga emphasized the importance of tapping into both formal knowledge and traditional wisdom to address climate change effectively.
He also underscored the need for modern agricultural technologies, including solar-powered irrigation, to reduce emissions and build resilience.
