In a captivating showdown at the Eldoret Sports Club on Sunday, Charles Omondi emerged as the hero for Nondescripts RFC, securing a dramatic victory over Strathmore Leos in the Tisap Sevens final. The final whistle blew with a score of 12-7 in favor of Nondies, leaving spectators in awe.
The Eldoret leg marked the penultimate round of the National Sevens Circuit, and it provided an early series of upsets as the favorites were knocked out of contention for the main cup.
KCB, entering the weekend as top seeds, suffered a shocking 5-10 defeat to Menengai Oilers in the quarterfinals, while Kabras Rugby, another powerhouse, was stunned by Mwamba RFC with a score of 19-5 at the same stage. These unexpected exits left the championship wide open, setting the stage for an exhilarating showdown.
Nondies took an early lead when Moses Begi scored the opening try, with Daniel Okito successfully adding the conversion to make it 7-0. However, Strathmore Leos fought back almost immediately, with Andrew Matoka finding the try line and Stephen Osumba nailing the conversion to level the score at 7-7.
Regulation time concluded with the score still tied, resulting in an extra-time thriller where Nondies ultimately triumphed, thanks to Omondi’s deciding moment. Their victory catapulted them into seventh place on the standings with 50 valuable points.
In the third-place playoff, Mwamba RFC secured a 12-7 win over Menengai Oilers, showcasing their prowess in the competition. Meanwhile, KCB salvaged fifth place with a 21-14 victory over Kabras Rugby.
Kabras Rugby retained their lead on the log with 92 points, holding a slender one-point advantage over KCB in the second position as they head into the final round of the season, the Kabeberi Sevens, next weekend.
