The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) underwent a reshuffle in its party leadership on Friday in response to the resignations and defections of some of its members.
The changes come hot on the heels of the party having kicked out some of its rebel members.
In these changes, Kisii Governor Simba Arati will assume the role of Deputy National Chairperson. Arati takes over from former Kisii Women Representative Janet Ong’era, who declared her allegiance to President William Ruto’s party.
Busia County MP Catherine Omanyo will succeed her predecessor Florence Mutua as the Deputy Secretary General. Mutua resigned from the party following the 2022 elections.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has been appointed as the new Deputy Organizing Secretary. Amisi steps into the position previously held by former Kwale Woman Representative Zulekha Hassan.
Meanwhile, Fatuma Masito will replace Olga Karani as the Deputy National Treasurer, while Migori Senator Eddie Oketch will take on the role of Secretary for Humanitarian and Disaster Management Affairs, replacing Bob Njagi.
ODM party also made changes to the security docket, replacing Elsie Muhanda with Justus Kizito.
These changes will come into immediate effect as the party aims to fortify its position. Governor Arati and his fellow appointees will serve in their respective roles until next year when the party is scheduled to conduct its primary elections.
“The party will hold its grassroots elections early next year. The dates for this exercise will be announced by the National Executive Committee,” ODM stated during its NEC meeting on Wednesday.
This reshuffling of leadership comes shortly after the party expelled several members for collaborating with President Ruto.
Notable MPs among those expelled include Phelix Odiwuor, also known as Jalang’o (Langata), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), and Gideon Ochanda (Bondo). Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda was also removed from the party.
