A Ugandan man in his 60s, Samuel Maikut, found himself behind bars after showing up at his in-laws’ home for an introduction ceremony empty-handed. The expected bride price, consisting of four cows, three goats, and other items, was conspicuously absent.

The father-in-law, Christopher Ngania, expressed shock and disappointment. He explained that they initially offered a combined introduction-and-wedding ceremony to ease the burden on Maikut, but the groom insisted on separate events.

“We agreed that the groom and his team would come with four cows and three goats, among other things, but the man came without anything,” he said.

Despite agreeing to the introduction on December 2nd, Maikut arrived much later than expected, leaving the waiting guests hungry. Even after a bull was slaughtered for the occasion, the groom’s team still hadn’t arrived. Two women finally showed up at 5pm, announcing Maikut’s arrival 20 minutes later.

Facing an increasingly hostile crowd, Ngania felt compelled to call the police and have his future son-in-law arrested.

In a radio interview, Maikut expressed regret and took responsibility for the “mess.” He acknowledged that his team, tasked with organizing the visit, had encountered unforeseen challenges but remained hesitant to disclose details.

“I had a team that was in charge of organising my visit, but we had a few challenges,” Mr Maikut said.

Despite his apology, he declared his willingness to discuss compensation for the incurred losses.
