Police in Makindu have arrested 47 Ethiopian nationals and a driver for being in the country illegally at Makindu town in Makueni County.

Makindu Subcounty police commander Jashon Polloh said the foreigners were arrested at Rubis Petrol Station near Makindu town along the Nairobi – Mombasa highway on Saturday morning.

“We received information that there were people who came out of a container and we rushed there and managed to arrest 47 Ethiopians and the driver,” Polloh said while speaking to the Press in Makindu.

Polloh said the illegal immigrants were on transit heading to Mombasa.

“They were travelling in a truck and might have navigated on their way from the Kenyan border and managed to reach here but due to the situation inside the container it became unbearable to them hence when they reached Rubis petrol station near Makindu town maybe they were complaining and the vehicle stopped probably to allow them come out to get fresh air or so,” he added.

Polloh said all the suspects have been placed in lawful police custody in Makindu police station and investigations are going on.

He said the truck and the container have also been taken to the police station.

The suspects will be arraigned in court once the investigations are completed.
