The XFL has gained attention not only for its thrilling gameplay but also for its unique approach to player compensation. So how much do XFL players make within this reimagined football landscape.

What is the XFL?

The XFL, which stands for the “Xtreme Football League,” is a professional American football league. It was originally created by WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) founder Vince McMahon and debuted its first iteration in 2001. The XFL aimed to provide an alternative football experience. This incorporated various rule changes and a more entertainment-focused presentation compared to the National Football League (NFL).

The original XFL, however, faced numerous challenges, including financial issues and a lack of sustained viewer interest. As a result, it ceased operations after just one season.

In 2018, Vince McMahon announced plans to revive the XFL with a new vision. The league was re-launched in 2020 with several modifications to the rules. It had a renewed focus on providing a faster-paced, fan-friendly football experience. Teams were spread across different cities. The league aimed to capture the attention of football fans during the NFL’s offseason.

Unfortunately, the 2020 XFL season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the league filing for bankruptcy. Despite this setback, there have been occasional discussions about the potential for the XFL’s return or restructuring in the future.

Why did Vince McMahon sell the XFL?

Vince McMahon, the founder of XFL, sold the league due to bankruptcy-related court cases. In 2020, McMahon tried to restart the league. However due to the pandemic, he decided not to buy back the league. Instead, the league was sold to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a former wrestler and Hollywood’s highest-paid actor .

McMahon’s original vision for the XFL was to bring the element of “sports entertainment” into football through this league. However, the league’s reliance on various unnecessary gimmicks quickly led to a disconnect with the audience. Viewership gradually started to decline. McMahon has stated that he would like to bring back another version someday, but with less emphasis on entertainment and more on football itself.

How much money did Dwayne The Rock Johnson pay for the XFL?

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, along with RedBird Capital and Dany Garcia, purchased the XFL for approximately $15 million. The transaction was subject to bankruptcy court approval and was expected to close on or shortly after August 21, 2020 .

How different is the XFL from the NFL

The XFL and NFL are two professional American football leagues that have some differences in their rules and regulations. The XFL was created to provide an alternative to the NFL and to bring the element of “sports entertainment” into football through this league . Here are some of the key differences between the two leagues:

  • Overtime rules: In the XFL, each team is given three attempts at a two-point conversion from their opponent’s 5-yard line. The team with the most conversions after those three attempts will be declared the winner. If the score remains tied after three attempts, then the teams will continue to alternate single possessions until a winner is decided.
  • Extra points: In the XFL, teams are not allowed to kick extra points following touchdowns. Instead, they must try to get into the end zone to tack on either one, two or three points to their score. A one-point try is attempted from the 2-yard line; a two-point try comes from the 5-yard line; and a three-point try comes from the 10-yard line. It is up to the coaches to decide which type of conversion to attempt. However, if the defense returns a try for a touchdown, they will receive points equal to what the offense was trying to get.

Kick-off rules

In the XFL, the kicker kicks off from the 30-yard line, and the coverage team lines up on the return side 35 yards away from the ball. The return team lines up on the 30-yard line, and the kicker’s coverage team lines up on the 35-yard line. The kicker must kick the ball in the air and in play between the opponent’s 20-yard line and the end zone. If the ball goes out of bounds or is not caught cleanly by the receiving team, the ball is placed at the kicking team’s 45-yard line.

  • Timeouts: In the XFL, each team is given two timeouts per half, while in the NFL, each team is given three timeouts per half.
  • Coach challenges: In the XFL, coaches are unable to have coach challenges as they can have in the NFL.

So how much do XFL players make in 2024?

Boasting a roster of top-tier American football athletes today, the XFL has garnered a growing fan base both in the United States and around the world. Despite its resurgence, a pressing question remains on the minds of many football enthusiasts: What is the compensation for XFL players? Undoubtedly, financial incentives play a pivotal role in attracting athletes to any league.. So how much do XFL players make?

In 2023, each XFL team faced the task of trimming its roster to 50 players for the regular season. While those who didn’t make the final cut still received compensation during training camp, it was not as substantial as what the selected players earned.

During the five-week training camp, participants who didn’t make the final roster earned $800 per week. For those who secured a spot on the team, a minimum one-year contract awaited, structured as follows:

  • Base Salary: $59,000
  • Per-Game Salary: $5,000
  • Bonus: $1,000 per win

Base salary

The $59,000 base salary exceeded that of another spring league, the USFL, by approximately $5,000. Additionally, the XFL sweetened the deal by offering nearly $20,000 in additional benefits per player. These benefits covered health, dental, and vision insurance, housing, and even meals, demonstrating the league’s commitment to player welfare.

Interestingly, even inactive players received compensation for games, a notable departure from the 2020 iteration of the league. Inactive players earned $1,500 per game and remained eligible for the $1,000 win bonus. Each game day allowed for a roster of 45 active players, leaving room for five players to be inactive, such as a third-string quarterback or a defensive depth player.

As of the end of last season, details regarding postseason player salaries were undisclosed. However, it is reasonable to assume that players in the semifinals earned an additional week’s salary in line with their regular-season earnings. If a team clinched the championship, players would enjoy an extra $12,000 in salary: $5,000 per playoff game (two) and $1,000 per win (two).

Comparatively, the USFL has committed to a $10,000 bonus for players on the active roster or practice squad of the championship-winning team. Although the XFL’s plans have not been officially confirmed, it’s plausible that a similar bonus structure might be in place.

Who is the highest-paid XFL player

According to XFL News Hub, the highest-paid player in the XFL is Brett Hundley, a football quarterback for XFL’s Vegas Vipers. Hundley was paid $200,000 for the 2023 season, which is $140,000 more (500% higher) than the regular XFL player’s salary . This figure towers over the regular XFL player’s salary by $140,000, marking a staggering 500% increase.
