Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has expressed his approval of Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen’s recent announcement regarding the commencement of the long-awaited Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension to Kisumu within this year.

In an official statement, Governor Nyong’o emphasized that the project is anticipated to enhance travel between Kisumu and Uganda, benefitting both regular commuters and business activities. He also highlighted the positive impact on the revitalized Kisumu Port, anticipating increased vibrancy.

The governor underscored the historical need for expanded transportation between the Lake Region and the rest of Kenya, expressing hope for the prompt execution of the SGR extension project.

Upon completion, Nyong’o believes the SGR will stimulate economic growth in Western Kenya and facilitate the development of the Western tourism circuit, home to numerous attractive tourist destinations.

Originally planned to connect Mombasa to Kisumu, the SGR project, initiated by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, faced funding challenges, resulting in a pause in Nakuru. Transport CS Murkomen recently announced that construction on the SGR extension from Naivasha to Kisumu is set to begin this year, although specific details on the start date and construction costs are yet to be disclosed.

Murkomen affirmed the government’s commitment to completing 35% of SGR Phase 2B (Naivasha – Kisumu) by the end of 2024. The initial phase of the SGR, costing over Sh350 billion, was financed by the Chinese government.

Looking ahead, the plan is to extend the SGR from Kisumu to Uganda, following the terms outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Kenya and Uganda on July 28, 2023.

Additionally, CS Murkomen revealed the government’s plans to initiate the construction of four Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) lines across the country, including routes like Embakasi – Ruai, Ngong – Kiserian, SGR Terminus – Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), and Voi – Taveta.
