Five people unfortunately lost their lives, while nine others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident in the Mahiga Meeru area along the Nyahururu-Nyeri road on Saturday evening.
The victims, comprising a driver and women from St. Peters Gaitega of the Cathedral Parish of the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a, were returning home after participating in a National prayer meeting at Subukia’s Marian Shrine.
The prayers that had been organized by the Catholic Women Association (CWA) were held on Friday evening, February 02.
According to witnesses, the 14-seater vehicle they were traveling in attempted to avoid a head-on collision with a trailer approaching from the opposite direction.
“The driver of the 14-seater vehicle they were traveling in was trying to evade hitting a trailer that was coming from the opposite direction in vain,” the witnesses said.
Unfortunately, the driver’s efforts to evade the collision were in vain, and the trailer, seemingly out of control due to brake failure, hit their vehicle.
Following the incident, the injured were transferred to Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital for medical treatment. Two were treated and discharged, while one was admitted to the hospital with head injuries.
The bodies of the five individuals who lost their lives at the scene were taken to the Nyahururu County Hospital Mortuary.
