A family in Alego/Usonga sub-county is crying for justice after their 17-year-old kin was died under unclear circumstances at Ngura village Central Alego location on Monday morning.
Ian Lawrence Otieno, a Form One student at St. Patricks’ Segere Mixed secondary school, was reportedly killed by his friends at a funeral night vigil (disco matanga) at around 1.00 am.
His mother Josephine Auma Ochol said Otieno left home to attend the funeral night vigil together with his other peers at around 9.00 pm on Sunday after taking supper.
She adds that a group of youths stormed her home in the wee hours of the night while wailing and informed her that Ian, who was her third born, had been murdered at an adjacent village.
Ama and some of her neighbors rushed to the scene and established that indeed Ian was dead.
Ian’s cousin Joseph Ouma, who also attended the vigil, says that they were on their way home when a group of friends attacked them. He managed to flee but Ian wasn’t so lucky.
When he returned to the scene, he found Ian dead.
It was at that juncture that the alarm was raised before members of the Nyumba Kumi led by Patrick Owino Ododa mounted a manhunt for the suspects and managed to arrest five of them who are currently locked up at Siaya police station to help with investigations.
Ian’s mother has therefore pleaded for justice to prevail saying that she has lost a child in whom she had high hopes.
Siaya County police commander Cleti Kimaiyo confirmed the incident, saying Ian’s body was taken to Siaya County Referral hospital mortuary for preservation and a postmortem as investigations continue. The motive of the killing is yet to be established.
