A 35-year-old man, Benson Maina Kamau, who was a prime suspect in the murder of his wife, found dead two weeks ago in Gakima village, Mukurweini, has reportedly committed suicide while in custody at Mukurweini police station.
Kamau took his own life by hanging himself with a mattress sling in one of the station’s toilets. The Nyeri County Police boss, Kipkorir Rotich, confirmed the incident, stating that Kamau was being held at the police station alongside another suspect at the time of his suicide.
According to Rotich, Kamau had visited the station to provide a statement regarding the death of his wife, Nancy Muthoni Maina.
However, he was detained after investigations identified him as a person of interest. The discovery of his body hanging from a toilet ventration with a mattress sling was made on Sunday morning by on-duty police officers, prompted by alerts from other inmates in the cell.
Muthoni had been found murdered two weeks prior, her body dumped on the roadside by unknown assailants. Initially classified as an unknown person, Kamau later surfaced at the station, identifying her as his wife.
Rotich mentioned that the deceased’s body has been transferred to Mukurweini police hospital, awaiting a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death.
