A devastating road accident involving a Matatu in Machakos has left several people feared dead and scores seriously injured, sending shockwaves through the community.
Yatta subcounty police commander Jane Makau confirmed that eight individuals lost their lives on the spot in the aftermath of the accident. The incident occurred on the Katangi-Machakos-Kitui-Nairobi road, just a few kilometers from the River Athi bridge.
According to eyewitnesses and other independent sources, victims of the accident were swiftly rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for urgent medical attention. Reports indicate that the ill-fated vehicle, laden with dozens of bags of charcoal on its carrier, lost control before veering off the road and landing in a ditch.
Disturbing images circulated online depict the mangled wreckage of the Matatu lying in the ditch, with debris scattered across the scene, painting a grim picture of the tragedy.
Makau provided further details, stating that the accident involved a 42-seater minibus en route from Kitui to Machakos when it met with disaster on Monday evening.
“Eight died on the spot in the incident that happened a few minutes past 5 p.m. today. Traffic officers from Masii police station in Mwala subcounty responded to the incident and conducted necessary actions,” Makau conveyed to the Star in a phone interview.
She added that responding officers swiftly cleared the scene, transporting the deceased to Machakos Level 5 Hospital Mortuary while the wreckage was towed to Masii police station pending thorough inspection and investigation.
