The government has began the process of releasing the bodies of the victims who died at the Shakahola forest last year.
At least seven bodies will be released to three families today from the Malindi Hospital Mortuary through a process which is being coordinated by a multi agency team from the Interior Ministry.
The process is however painstakingly slow causing frustration among affected families which have been camping at the hospital from morning.
Only 34 bodies have been positively identified so far out of the over 400 that were exhumed from the Shakahola forest on March last year.
The government insists that it will only release bodies to families that have been contacted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to come for the remains of their loved ones.
The Shakahola religious cult was put under a tight national microscope in April 2023 when two children died under their parent’s care after Pastor Paul Mackenzie instructed members of his church to starve themselves to “meet Jesus”.
Mackenzie was arrested in April 15, 2023 and has since been under police custody.
