A male patient at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) has died by suicide, reportedly due to distress over his accumulating medical bills.

Hospital officials confirmed that the patient hanged himself inside Ward 8 on Sunday, where he had been recuperating after undergoing surgery on his right ribs.

According to sources, including fellow patients, the man had expressed fear that his family had abandoned him and that he would be unable to pay his medical bills, potentially leading to his detention at the hospital.

On Sunday, he used a nylon rope tied to a metal bar above his hospital bed to end his life.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
