Four staff members of Body by Design Clinic in Nairobi are set to face manslaughter charges on Wednesday over the death of Lucy Wambui Ng’ang’a, who passed away while undergoing plastic surgery last year.
The suspects, including surgeon Robert Maweu Mutula, George Wakaria Njoroge, and the clinic’s proprietor Lilian Edna Wanjiru, were expected to appear in court on Tuesday for plea-taking. However, they missed the court session, prompting Kibera Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Temu to reschedule the hearing for Wednesday at 9:00 AM.
“The suspects were initially scheduled to take their plea today but missed the court appearance, prompting the court to reschedule the hearing for tomorrow,” stated the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP).
Lucy Wambui died on October 6, 2024, while undergoing a cosmetic procedure at Omnicare Medical Limited, also known as Body by Design, located on Kabarsiran Avenue in Nairobi. The facility had been marketed as a health clinic, but government records later revealed it to be a beauty spa.
An autopsy report indicated that Lucy’s death resulted from complications arising from the cosmetic procedures she underwent at the clinic.
Following her death, the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council shut down the facility due to multiple violations, including unlawfully operating a health institution without the necessary license, failing to meet required medical standards, and not adhering to patient safety regulations.
